Mission
Statement
Our mission is to promote the awareness of the public
and health professionals of PSP, to reassure people with
PSP and their carers that they are not alone in their
difficulty and that assistance and advice is available.
Our goal is to provide a friendly, supportive and encouraging
environment where people may share their feelings and
experiences.

The Victorian PSP Support Group was inaugurated in April
2002, in response to a need for information and support
for people with PSP and their carers.
The immediate aim of our group is to provide support and
information to people with PSP and their carers. We hold
bi-monthly support meetings, comprising informal discussions
and socialisation as well as presentations by professional
service providers.
The meetings are co-ordinated by allied health workers
and chaired by group members. Topics are selected by the
group members, in consultation with the allied health
workers, whose role it is to facilitate the group and
help access educational resources.
Our ongoing and long term objectives are to:
| |
 |
Increase awareness of PSP in Australia; |
| |
 |
Identify and satisfactorily address key carer
issues specific to PSP; |
| |
 |
Identify the pattern of functional problems associated
with PSP; |
| |
 |
Effect appropriate research and in turn, the development
of sound theoretical framework for effective allied
health intervention; |
| |
 |
Develop a carer support structure to meet their
needs; |
| |
 |
Provide up-to-date education programs to patients,
families, carers and other professionals; |
| |
 |
Develop appropriate resource materials; |
| |
 |
Investigate the demographics of PSP. |
The PSP Support Group meets bi-monthly at the Movement
Disorders Clinic:

Due to the similarity of early symptoms, PSP is often
misdiagnosed as PD. Recognising this, the Victorian PSP
Support Group is now under the umbrella of Parkinson's
Victoria. This gives us a wider access to resources
as Parkinsons Victoria is already a well established,
large organisation. It also gives Parkinson's Victoria
the ability to refer people to us that may have been initially
misdiagnosed with PD. It is a strategic alliance in the
best interests of everyone concerned.
| Paul
Newman Foundation |
 |
The Paul
Newman Foundation, established by legendary
American actor Paul Newman to distribute profits
generated by the sale of his renowned pasta sauces
and salad dressings, has come to the financial aid
of the Victorian PSP Support Group with a grant
of US$8,000 (AU$10,600).
|
 |
The Paul Newman philosophy is to donate
all profits from world-wide sales to smaller, lesser
known organisations which may not have access to
government or corporate funding, yet still provide
essential community support.
Our hearty thanks go to the Foundation & we
encourage all of our members and friends to support
the Paul Newman's Own brand. |
